HelpKenya is a local Kenyan organisation that aims to work with existing groups and organisations in Kenya and internationally to encourage collaboration and networks to increase the effectiveness of these groups in working to alleviate some of the poverty currently suffered by many Kenyans.

Objectives

HelpKenya currently has the following objectives:

• to assist international volunteers to come and work in Kenya for an affordable price
• to provide a means of income for local Kenyans by hosting volunteers
• to assist various local organisations and groups by giving them a presence on the web and helping to attract volunteers to their projects
• to develop collaboration between various local organisations (see the Kibera Collaboration Project)
• to allow international benefactors to easily make donations of resources or money.

History

The idea for HelpKenya came about when some international volunteers began discussing their volunteer experiences with local Kenyans at the beginning of 2007. Since then a number of months have gone into planning how to organisation will run, how it will look after volunteers, and encourage collaboration and networking between the various local groups and organisations. It is currently being registered as a Community-based organisation (CBO).
