History and Development
Newdawn Community Centre was established on 26th April 2004 to provide education and life-skills training to the poor youths and adults living in the poor slums area of Mukuru in Nairobi. The slum area has a population of approximately 500,000 people and covers Kwa-Reuben, Kwa-Njenga, Lurgana and Sinai.
Newdawn success has come as a result of the efforts and determination of its founders, Ogola Bronke Onyango and other staff members, the participation and collaboration with the local administrators.
Since the establishment Newdawn Community Centre has experienced rapid growth, visible accomplishment, better result and national recognition. Currently Newdawn Community Centre has expanded beyond the city limits to rural communities including Kisii and Kabondo.
Mission
Newdawn Community Centre's mission is to provide:
- Quality education to all children, youth and adults
- Opportunities to youths to exercise their talents in different fields
- Information to youth to help realize their importance in the community
- A link to the worldwide community to support poor people
Vision to 2015
- To create opportunities and partnerships that will strengthen the community
- To demonstrate creativitiy and professionalism in the youth driven international organization manamgement
- To produce the world’s most powerful knowledge resource for social empowerment
- To enable the community to realize that youths are key stakeholders in any policy making i.e. national and international
Objectives
- To provide the community with formal education, health services, guidance and counseling
- To inform the community about HIV/AIDS and how to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs in the community
- To care for the HIV/AIDS affected orphans and the disabled youths
- To fight poverty by providing training and employment to the youths
- To engage in farming activities in rural areas
- To inform the community about drug abuse, its effects and control prevention
- Engaging youth in sports
